Today, we celebrate the Birthday of James D. Yancey, better known as J Dilla. A true pioneer and one of the most influential and revered Hip Hop producers of our time, Dilla’s innovative beats and distinctive time signatures changed the way we heard music, and his timeless contribution continues to inspire and delight music lovers worldwide. His impact on the genre is undeniable and has personally left a deeply resonant and significant impression, hence the popular adage “J Dilla Changed My Life.”
Design Ideation
To honour Dilla’s immense contribution to music and to show my love and appreciation, I’ve created a special tribute t-shirt design. The story behind it is that this idea would simply not leave me alone, so I sat down at my desk, got loose and slowly but surely the different elements came to mind and made themselves known on the page.
Inspired in part by the classic vintage American diner signs of the 1950’s and my obsession with the huuuge Randy’s Donut Shop sign in LA that illustrator Jeff Jank so beautifully rendered for the alternate ‘Donuts’ album cover; this is my take on an imaginary Dilla-esque billboard sign.
The funny thing is… i don’t actually like eating donuts (they’re umm, too doughy!) rather i just love drawing them! So coupled with the beat master’s drum machine of choice (The AKAI MPC 3000), signature phrase ‘Turn It Up’ and a Letter D representing the ‘D’ aka the City of Detroit, this is my homage to the quintessential producer's producer.
Paying It Forward / Giving Back
Being an independent artist, i am mindful of and conscious about the sensitive and delicate nature of celebrating an artist who very sadly is no longer with us. Let it be known that my intention is absolutely and solely to honour, celebrate and revere his music through the medium of my art. This is a form of self expression and celebration and, the idea would not leave me alone - so in fairness, without it the world would simply not have it! Furthermore, i will be donating 10% of annual profits from this design to Lupus UK on an annual basis, once the brand and consequent sales get truly rolling.
